The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) is a Canadian immigration program that offers permanent residence to skilled trades workers. It was launched in 2013 to give global talent a dedicated pathway into Canada. It is one of three skilled worker programs managed through Canada’s Express Entry system. The FSTP program prioritizes immigration for trades occupations because of labour shortages across the country.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the FSTP, you must meet six types of requirements. For one, you must have a Canadian job offer or proof of employability. This job must be full-time (30 hours per week or more) and paid for at least one year. Alternatively, you can also show that you have a certificate of qualification issued by a provincial or territorial regulator in Canada. This certificate proves that you’ve passed the required certification exam and have the skills to work in your chosen skilled trade in Canada.
Another requirement is demonstrating that you have sufficient language abilities to communicate in Canada. This means having an intermediate grasp of English or French. You can demonstrate this by taking an approved test such as the International English Language Testing System or the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program. You can also take the Test d’Evaluation de Français or TEF to prove your ability in French.
If you meet all of these requirements, you can submit an Express Entry profile for the FSTP. You’ll also need to gather the necessary documentation, including your work experience, education, and language test scores. Once your profile meets the minimum CRS score, you will receive an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence through your IRCC profile.
How Does FSTP Work?
The FSTP is designed to address the shortage of skilled trades workers in Canada as the baby boomers approach retirement age. It is one of three federal economic immigration pathways managed by Express Entry. Unlike the Canadian Experience Class and the French-Speaking Civilian Visa Program, applicants under the FSTP must have at least one year of full-time skilled work experience. They must also meet minimum language requirements in English or French and have a post-secondary certificate, diploma, or degree.
In the FSTP, candidates get extra points for completing their studies in Canada or having a Canadian post-secondary education. These extra points are awarded based on the results of an Educational Credential Assessment. This increases your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply in the Express Entry pool.
You can also try to improve your CRS score by obtaining additional work experience or retaking and improving your language test scores. In addition, you can try to meet the requirements of an Express Entry-aligned Provincial Nominee Program stream that specifically seeks skilled tradespersons.

Occupation List
The eligible jobs are listed on the Canadian government’s National Occupational Classification (NOC) list and divided into major groups. These include industrial, electrical, and construction trades; maintenance trades; natural resources and agriculture production supervisory trades; processing, manufacturing, and utilities supervisory and control trades; and cooks and bakers. The minimum required CRS score is 600, and candidates with a NOC group 5 or 6 job can get more points if they have a high level of education or training.

While the processing time for a Canada PR application under this program can be longer than other programs, the process is still relatively fast. Most FSTP applications are processed in 31 months or less, including the time it takes to submit your biometrics and complete the required security checks.
